Pocket Gopher in California: Species, Behavior, and Control

Everything Southern California Homeowners Need to Know About Pocket Gophers

The pocket gopher is the most common burrowing pest in Southern California. Understanding the specific species in our region, their behavior, and what drives their activity helps homeowners recognize problems early and make informed decisions about control.

Pocket Gopher Species in Southern California

Three pocket gopher species are common in Southern California:

Botta's Pocket Gopher (Thomomys bottae): The most widespread species in Southern California, found in virtually every county and habitat type. Botta's pocket gophers are medium-sized (5-9 inches body length), brown to gray in color, and highly adaptable to urban and suburban environments. This is the species responsible for the vast majority of residential gopher problems in LA, Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties. Valley Pocket Gopher (Thomomys umbrinus): Found in some inland valley areas. Similar in appearance and behavior to Botta's pocket gopher. San Diego Pocket Gopher (Thomomys bottae subsp.): A subspecies found in parts of San Diego and southern Orange County.

For practical pest control purposes, all pocket gopher species in Southern California are treated using the same methods — species identification does not change the control approach.

Pocket Gopher Behavior

Pocket gophers are solitary, fossorial (underground-dwelling) mammals that spend nearly their entire lives in self-constructed tunnel systems. Key behaviors that affect control:

Territoriality: Adult pocket gophers maintain exclusive territories and actively expel other gophers. One gopher per tunnel system is the norm — if you see mounds, you almost certainly have a single gopher, not a colony. Continuous tunneling: Gophers tunnel year-round in Southern California, expanding their territory and relocating tunnel sections throughout their 1-3 year lifespan. Cheek pouches: The "pocket" in pocket gopher refers to fur-lined cheek pouches used to carry food back to storage chambers — not a pocket on their body. These pouches allow gophers to harvest large amounts of roots and bulbs efficiently.

Pocket Gopher Habitat in Southern California

Pocket gophers thrive in loose, moist, well-vegetated soils — exactly what Southern California's irrigated residential landscapes provide. They are found from coastal communities to inland valleys, in every soil type that supports irrigation. They do not establish in very rocky, heavily compacted, or extremely dry soil.
