Mole Tunnels in Your Yard: What They Are and What to Do

Identifying Active Mole Runs for Effective Mole Control

Mole tunnels are the underground highways and feeding runs that moles dig as they search for earthworms beneath your lawn. Understanding the difference between mole tunnel types is essential for effective control — surface feeding tunnels and deep primary runs require completely different treatment approaches.

Two Types of Mole Tunnels

Surface feeding tunnels (shallow runs): Created just 1-2 inches below the surface as moles search for earthworms in the shallow soil layer. These are visible as raised ridges running in irregular patterns across your lawn. Surface feeding tunnels may be used once and abandoned, or used repeatedly for days to weeks before the mole moves on. Primary runs (deep tunnels): The permanent highway system moles use for daily travel through their territory. Primary runs are 6-18 inches deep and are used repeatedly — sometimes for years. These are not visible from the surface and must be located by probing.

Why This Distinction Matters for Mole Control

Most DIY mole control fails because traps are set in surface feeding tunnels rather than primary runs. Surface tunnels are easy to find (just look for the raised ridges) but are not reliably used by the mole — it may not return to that specific surface run for days or at all.

Primary runs are used consistently and are where traps must be placed for effective mole elimination. Finding primary runs requires experience with soil probing and mole behavior patterns. This is the key skill that professional mole control technicians develop through repeated practice.

How to Identify Active Mole Tunnels

To check whether a surface tunnel is active: flatten a short section of raised ridge by pressing it down with your foot. Check it after 24-48 hours. If the ridge has re-inflated, the tunnel is actively being used. If it stays flat, the mole may have abandoned that run.

For primary runs: probe the soil in areas between fresh mole mounds and surface ridges. Primary runs typically run between the mound areas, at depth. An experienced technician can locate primary runs within a few minutes using a gopher/mole probe.

Professional Mole Tunnel Treatment

Rodent Guys locates primary tunnel runs and places traps correctly for each property. Our 60-day guarantee covers return visits if mole activity persists or resumes after treatment.
