Gopher vs Mole: How to Tell the Difference
Identify Which Pest Is Destroying Your Southern California Lawn
Gophers and moles both damage lawns in Southern California — but they are completely different animals that require different treatment. Misidentifying which pest you have is the most common reason DIY control fails. Here is how to tell them apart.
The Quickest Way to Tell Gopher vs Mole Damage
Look at the mound shape:
If you see raised ridges running across your lawn just below the surface, that is almost certainly a mole. Gophers rarely create surface ridges — they push all excavated dirt out through a single exit point.
Gopher vs Mole Key Differences
What they eat: Gophers eat plant roots, bulbs, and tubers. If your plants are dying with intact stems, a gopher has eaten the root system from below. Moles eat earthworms, grubs, and soil insects — not plants. Mole damage is primarily cosmetic rather than plant damage. Visibility: You will almost never see a gopher above ground. Moles also rarely appear above ground, but their shallow surface tunnels create visible raised ridges across your lawn. Geography in Southern California: Pocket gophers are found throughout all of SoCal in every climate and soil type. Moles prefer moist soil with high earthworm populations — coastal areas and well-irrigated lawns in LA and Orange County. If you are inland with dry soil, gophers are almost certainly your problem.Gopher Holes vs Mole Holes
Gopher holes are plugged, crescent-shaped openings at the base of gopher mounds. Gophers keep their tunnel entrances sealed — they are not open burrow entrances.
Mole volcano mounds have a central plug just below the surface. Moles are not the same as voles — voles create small open holes about the diameter of a quarter.
Can You Have Both Gophers and Moles?
Yes. Some Southern California properties have both active gopher and mole problems simultaneously. If you are seeing both fan-shaped mounds and volcano-shaped mounds, you may have both. A Rodent Guys inspection confirms which pests are active and recommends appropriate treatment for each.
Treatment Differences
Gopher traps are placed deep in the primary tunnel system. Our technicians probe the soil to locate the main tunnel run, excavate a small access point, and set traps in both directions. Gopher control includes a 60-day guarantee.
Mole traps must be placed in primary runs — the deep, permanent tunnels moles use repeatedly. Surface feeding runs are not reliable trap locations and most DIY attempts fail because traps are set in the wrong tunnel. Mole control also includes a 60-day guarantee.
